Wife and Children's Maintenance in Pakistan: How Much and How Long

March 2026 · LexForm Research · MFLO 1961; West Pakistan Family Courts Act 1964

Legal obligations for maintenance (nafaqa) of wife and children under Pakistani family law, including calculation methods.

The husband is legally obligated to maintain his wife during marriage and during the iddat period after divorce (3 menstrual cycles or 3 months). Children's maintenance continues until sons are self-supporting and daughters are married. The Family Court determines the amount based on the husband's income, the wife's reasonable needs, and the standard of living during marriage. Courts can order interim maintenance pending trial. If the husband fails to pay, the court can issue a warrant of arrest, attach his property, or strike his defence in the main suit.
