Understanding Your Nikah Nama: Key Terms and Conditions

March 2026 · LexForm Research · MFLO 1961; Nikahnama Rules

What every clause in the Pakistani nikah nama means and why the terms you agree to at the time of marriage matter in divorce.

The nikah nama (marriage contract) is a legally binding document that sets the terms of your marriage. Key clauses include: mehr amount (prompt and deferred), delegation of divorce right to the wife (Column 18 — the right of talaq-e-tafweez), conditions for polygamy (Column 19), maintenance arrangements, and special conditions (Column 20). Many couples sign the nikah nama without understanding these clauses. Column 18 is particularly important — if the wife is given the delegated right of divorce, she can pronounce divorce without going to court. LexForm advises couples on nikah nama terms before signing.
