How to Register for NTN on FBR IRIS Portal: Step-by-Step

March 2026 · By LexForm Research · Income Tax Ordinance 2001; Finance Act 2025

Detailed walkthrough of the NTN registration process on FBR's IRIS portal for individuals and businesses, including documents required and common errors to avoid.

Why You Need an NTN

A National Tax Number is your unique identifier in Pakistan's tax system. Without it, you cannot file an income tax return, appear on the Active Taxpayer List, or claim lower withholding tax rates on banking, property, and vehicle transactions. Every person earning above Rs. 600,000 per year is legally required to register and file, though in practice, millions who are liable have not done so.

FBR registration is done entirely online through the IRIS portal at iris.fbr.gov.pk. The old system of visiting tax offices and filling paper forms has been replaced with a digital process that, when it works smoothly, can result in NTN issuance within hours. The challenges arise when the portal has technical issues, when NADRA data does not match, or when the applicant is unsure about which fields to complete.

Step-by-Step Registration for Individuals

Navigate to iris.fbr.gov.pk and click on Registration for Unregistered Persons. Enter your 13-digit CNIC number. The system will pull your name, date of birth, and other details from the NADRA database. If your CNIC is expired, the system will reject the registration — renew your CNIC at NADRA first. Set your username (typically your CNIC) and a strong password. Enter your active mobile number and email address.

FBR will send a one-time PIN to your mobile via SMS. Enter this PIN to verify your number. Then complete the registration form: select your principal source of income (salary, business, property, capital gains, or other), enter your employer's NTN if you are salaried, and provide your residential and business addresses. The system will ask you to select a principal business activity from a dropdown — for salaried individuals, select the code that matches your occupation.

Upload scanned copies of your CNIC (front and back) and a recent utility bill as proof of address. Submit the form. FBR typically processes individual registrations within a few hours. Your NTN will appear on your IRIS dashboard. This number is permanent and does not change even if you change jobs, move cities, or change your income source.

Business NTN Registration

For sole proprietorships, the process is identical to individual registration — you register using your personal CNIC and select business as your principal income source. For AOPs (partnerships), you need the partnership deed (on stamp paper) and CNICs of all partners. For private limited companies, you need the SECP incorporation certificate, memorandum and articles of association, and CNICs of all directors.

Company NTN registration can take 1-3 business days. FBR may ask for clarification if the company structure is complex or if any of the directors are already flagged for non-compliance. Once the NTN is issued, you must also register for sales tax (STRN) if your business supplies goods or taxable services. STRN registration is separate and done through the same IRIS portal.

Common errors that delay registration include: mismatched CNIC data between NADRA and the registration form, expired CNICs, incorrect business activity codes, and failure to upload all required documents. If your registration is rejected, the system usually provides a reason. Correct the issue and resubmit.
