Patent Filing in Pakistan: Process, Costs, and Requirements

Patent protection in Pakistan is governed by the Patents Ordinance 2000. Applications are filed with the Patent Office at IPO Pakistan. The application must include a complete specification with claims, abstract, and drawings. The filing fee is Rs. 4,000. Pakistan is a PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) member, allowing applicants to enter the national phase within 31 months of the priority date. After filing, the patent undergoes substantive examination. The term of a patent is 20 years from the filing date. Annual renewal fees must be paid to maintain the patent in force.
