Talaq Procedure in Pakistan: Union Council Notice and 90-Day Process

Under S.7 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, the husband must give written notice of talaq to the Chairman of the Union Council and send a copy to the wife. The Chairman constitutes an Arbitration Council for reconciliation. The talaq becomes effective after 90 days from the date of notice. If the wife is pregnant, the talaq becomes effective after delivery or 90 days, whichever is later. Failure to give notice to the Union Council is a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment up to one year and fine up to Rs. 5,000.
