UK Spouse Visa from Pakistan in 2026: Financial Requirements, Application Process, and Key Changes from April
The UK spouse visa, formally known as the Family visa (partner route), allows the husband or wife of a British citizen or settled person to enter and live in the United Kingdom. For Pakistani nationals, it is one of the most commonly applied-for visa categories, and also one of the most document-intensive. The rules are set out in Appendix FM to the Immigration Rules, supplemented by the Immigration (Financial Requirement) (Amendment) Regulations.
This article explains the current requirements as they apply from April 2026, including the financial threshold, visa fees, English language requirement, and the practical steps involved in making a successful application from Pakistan.
Eligibility: Who Can Apply
To qualify for a UK spouse visa, the applicant must be legally married to a person who is either a British citizen or a person with indefinite leave to remain (settled status) in the UK. The marriage must be recognised under the laws of the country where it took place. For Pakistani applicants, a nikah performed in Pakistan and registered with the relevant union council is accepted, provided a certified nikah nama (marriage certificate) is produced.
Both the applicant and the sponsor must be aged 18 or over at the date of application. The couple must intend to live together permanently in the UK, and they must demonstrate that their relationship is genuine and subsisting. The Home Office examines this requirement closely and will look at the history of the relationship, communication records, visits, photographs, and any other evidence showing that the marriage is not one of convenience.
The applicant must not fall for refusal under the general grounds of the Immigration Rules. This includes having no unspent criminal convictions, no adverse immigration history (such as previous overstaying or use of deception), and no involvement in activities contrary to the public good.
The Financial Requirement: The 29,000 Pounds Threshold
The financial requirement is the single most common reason for spouse visa refusals. Since the April 2024 increase, the minimum income threshold for a spouse visa has been set at 29,000 pounds per year. This figure applies to the initial application and represents the gross annual income of the UK-based sponsor, or the combined income of the sponsor and applicant where the applicant has permitted earnings.
The financial requirement can be met in several ways. The most straightforward is through the sponsor's employment income. The sponsor must have been employed for at least six months with the same employer at the date of application, and their gross annual salary must be at least 29,000 pounds. Six months of payslips and corresponding bank statements, plus a letter from the employer confirming the role, salary, and start date, are the standard documents required.
Where the sponsor is self-employed, they must produce at least the last full financial year's self-assessment tax return and the corresponding SA302 tax calculation from HMRC, along with business bank statements showing the income actually received. Two years of accounts may be needed in some cases.
An alternative route is through cash savings. The couple must hold cash savings of at least 88,500 pounds for at least six months prior to the application. This figure is calculated as the shortfall below 29,000 pounds multiplied by 2.5, plus 16,000 pounds. Where savings are relied upon in combination with income, the calculation adjusts accordingly.
A less commonly used route is the "adequate maintenance" test, which applies where the sponsor receives certain disability-related benefits. In such cases, the couple need only show that they can adequately maintain themselves without recourse to public funds, rather than meeting the 29,000-pound threshold.
One important change from the previous regime: adding dependent children to the application no longer increases the financial threshold. The 29,000-pound figure applies regardless of the number of dependants included.
English Language Requirement
Applicants for an initial spouse visa must demonstrate English language ability at level A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). This is the most basic level and requires the ability to understand and use familiar everyday expressions. The test must be taken with a Home Office-approved provider. For applicants in Pakistan, Trinity College London and IELTS (by the British Council) are the main approved providers.
Exemptions from the English language requirement apply in limited circumstances: where the applicant is a national of a majority English-speaking country, where the applicant holds a degree taught in English (with an appropriate NARIC/ECCTIS statement), or where the applicant has a physical or mental condition that prevents them from meeting the requirement.
At the extension stage (after the initial 33 months), the applicant must demonstrate English at the higher A2 level. At the settlement (indefinite leave to remain) stage, the requirement rises to B1, which involves independent use of the language.
Fees and Costs from April 2026
The visa application fee for a spouse visa submitted from outside the UK is 1,938 pounds. For applications submitted on or after 8 April 2026, this fee increases to 2,064 pounds. This is the Home Office fee only and does not include other costs.
In addition, applicants must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which grants access to the National Health Service during their stay. The IHS rate is 1,035 pounds per year, and since the initial grant is for 33 months (2 years and 9 months), the total IHS payment is 3,105 pounds. This must be paid upfront at the time of application.
On top of the Home Office fee and IHS, applicants should budget for the English language test fee (typically 150 to 190 pounds), the tuberculosis (TB) test fee (Pakistani applicants must take a TB test at a designated clinic in Pakistan), and any document translation and notarisation costs. The total cost for a spouse visa application from Pakistan, including all fees and incidental costs, typically falls between 7,500 and 8,000 pounds.
The Tuberculosis Test
Pakistan is a listed country for the purposes of the TB screening requirement. Applicants must take a TB test at an approved clinic and produce a certificate confirming they are free of active pulmonary tuberculosis. In Pakistan, the approved clinics are operated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore. The certificate is valid for six months from the date of issue, so applicants should time the test carefully in relation to their application date.
Accommodation Requirement
The sponsor must show that adequate accommodation is available for the couple (and any dependants) in the UK without recourse to public funds. The accommodation must not be overcrowded within the meaning of the Housing Act 1985. An inspection is not normally carried out, but the application must include evidence such as a tenancy agreement, mortgage statement, or a letter from the property owner confirming that the couple will be permitted to reside there. A property inspection report from the local council can strengthen the application, though it is not strictly required.
Application Process: Step by Step
The application is made online through the UK government's visa application website. The applicant creates an account, completes the application form, and pays the visa fee and IHS. After completing the online form, the applicant books an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Pakistan. The main VACs are in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi, operated by VFS Global.
At the appointment, the applicant submits biometric data (fingerprints and a photograph) and may submit supporting documents. Most documents are now uploaded online rather than submitted physically, but original passports must be presented at the VAC.
The standard processing time for a spouse visa from Pakistan is approximately 24 weeks (six months), though this can vary. A priority processing service is available for an additional fee, which aims to reduce the wait to approximately six weeks, though it is not always available and is subject to capacity.
Supporting documents should include, at a minimum: the applicant's passport, marriage certificate (nikah nama with certified English translation), sponsor's passport or status document, sponsor's employment evidence (payslips, bank statements, employer letter), English language test certificate, TB test certificate, evidence of accommodation, and relationship evidence (photographs, communication records, travel records, statements from family members).
After Entry: Extension and Settlement
The initial spouse visa is granted for 33 months (2 years and 9 months). Before it expires, the applicant must apply to extend their leave for a further 30 months. At the extension stage, the financial requirement must be met again (at the same threshold), and the English language requirement rises to A2.
After a total of 60 months (five years) on the spouse route, the applicant can apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR), which is permanent residence. The ILR application requires passing the Life in the UK test, meeting the B1 English language requirement, and satisfying the financial and relationship requirements again. The ILR application fee is currently 2,885 pounds.
Twelve months after receiving ILR, the applicant becomes eligible to apply for British citizenship through naturalisation, subject to meeting the residence and good character requirements.
Common Pitfalls and Practical Tips
Several mistakes recur in spouse visa applications from Pakistan. The most frequent is failure to meet the financial requirement in the precise format demanded by the rules. Bank statements must correspond exactly to the payslips submitted, and any discrepancies in amounts or dates will result in refusal. Self-employed applicants often fail to produce the full set of tax documents or to show that declared income was actually received into their bank account.
Another common issue is the submission of a nikah nama without a certified English translation. Translations must be done by a professional translator and must include the translator's credentials and a certification statement.
Applicants should also be aware that the Home Office conducts credibility interviews, either at the VAC or by telephone. These interviews probe the details of the relationship. Both the applicant and the sponsor should be prepared to answer questions about how they met, the circumstances of their marriage, their communication habits, and their plans for life in the UK. Inconsistencies between the applicant's and sponsor's accounts can lead to a refusal on genuine relationship grounds.
Finally, applicants with any adverse immigration history, including previous visa refusals, overstaying, or use of deception, should seek legal advice before applying. Previous refusals do not automatically bar a fresh application, but they must be disclosed and addressed in the application.
