How to Check Your FBR Active Taxpayer Status in 2026

March 2026 · By LexForm Research · Income Tax Ordinance 2001; Finance Act 2025

Three methods to verify your ATL filer status with FBR: SMS, online portal, and IRIS dashboard. Plus what to do if your name is missing from the Active Taxpayer List.

Three Ways to Check Your ATL Status

The quickest method is SMS. Send your 13-digit CNIC number (without dashes) to 9966 from any Pakistani mobile network. You will receive an instant response confirming whether you are on the Active Taxpayer List, the tax year for which you last filed, and your NTN number. This service is free and works 24 hours a day.

The second method is the FBR Online Verification Portal at e.fbr.gov.pk. Navigate to ATL Inquiry, select Income Tax, and enter either your CNIC or NTN number. The portal will display your ATL status, registration details, and filing history. This method provides more detail than SMS and is useful when you need to verify the status of a business entity or a third party.

The third method is logging into your IRIS account at iris.fbr.gov.pk. Your dashboard displays your NTN, ATL status, filing history, and any outstanding notices or demands. This is the most comprehensive view and is necessary for managing your tax affairs, filing returns, and responding to FBR communications.

What to Do If You Are Not on the ATL

If you have filed your return but your name does not appear on the ATL, the most common reason is timing. The ATL is updated on the first of each month. If you filed after the last update, your name will appear in the next monthly cycle. If more than one month has passed since filing and you are still not listed, contact FBR through the IRIS helpdesk or visit your Regional Tax Office.

If you have never filed a return, you will need to register for an NTN (if you do not already have one) and file your return. For salaried individuals, the process is straightforward and can be completed in a single sitting with the right documents. For business owners and self-employed professionals, the process involves computing taxable income, preparing financial statements, and calculating any advance tax already paid.

If you filed late and missed the original deadline, you may need to pay the ATL surcharge to appear on the list. The surcharge amount varies but is designed to be less than the cost of remaining a non-filer. The surcharge is paid through a Computerised Payment Receipt (CPR) and can be generated on the IRIS portal.
